model death: update

Ruslana Korshunova, 20, graced the covers of European Vogue editorials and was runway model for such designers as Jil Stuart, Betsey Johnson, and Libertine. She also jumped out of the 9th floor window of her Financial District loft to her death yesterday afternoon. By-standers commented that the sound of her death sounded like a gunshot or small explosion. Her death has been listed as a suicide as of right now since there were no signs of struggle in her apartment and the construction safety netting that surrounded her balcony (repairs were being made to the structure) had been cut. She was represented by IMG and New York models both of which are declining to comment on the situation as is the board president of the late-model's condo. I wont place bets on what her real cause of death may have been, but I sense a sad, sad, mystery about to unfold...that is if anyone chooses to investigate for any wrong doing. Like most models, Ruslana was working to send money home to help support her family who live in Kazakhstan.
Update: modelslips via jezebel gives really thoughtful insight into this situation

ooga booga man

I accidentally came upon OogaBooga while randomly googling for fancy vĂȘtements and I am fucking psyched that it popped up! Where else am I going to find Calvin Johnson mix tapes or 5$ Ian Svenonius DVDs?! Are you kidding me? is this a music/art/rare trinket wet dream? They also have a great assortment of clothing and accessories to appease the vain fashion B in me including such trixy to find online lines as Bless and Opening Ceremony. If this wasn't enough to make your /my slightly inebriated head spin, they are having a pretty epic sale as well right now. So, if you didn't spend your entire stimulus check on "untraceables" (read: 'dro/'alch) spend the rest here.

lyell lyell

Lyell, one of the first boutiques to go the route of having a store front, then a store brand, then a runway show for the store brand, has a creepy-dreamy spring look-book up on their website presently (as well as their fall 08 premiere runway show). The Spring line is a little 40s vintage and a little 'Wonder Years' and a lot wearable either as a collection (as this pretty thing photographed by fashionista shows) or piece by piece. Fall collection has a similar theme, but in more seasonally appropriate fabrics and palette; as though the spring dream girl has grown up into an authoritative lady. Lyell is located in NYC on Elizabeth street and refinery29 sometimes carries a selection of their collection online.

rikke hubert: righteous, hello

In case you are still unaware of my blinding love for all things that come out of the nordic hinterland please have a listen about danish designer, Rikke Hubert, and come to my senses.
Hubert's designs show the traditional attention to drape and form that you often see from Scandi designers. While the garments do not, at first look, appear complex, your eye will adjust and see the wrapped seaming, textural edge finishes, and the depth of draping that each of Hubert's designs posses. Refinery29 first interviewed this young designer and finds that Hubert's current collection is inspired by candy while her fall 08 collection was driven by Depeche Mode. Each of her inspirations are straight-forward, but in final garment come across in a semi-sinister, languid way. The designs call to mind a manic-depressive Acne or Stine Goya (another of Hubert's inspirations); where those brands concentrate on the aesthetic possibilities of function mixed lightly with personal theme, Hubert concentrates on representing her theme to the fullest while still considering the drape and elliptical shapes that are true to her design heritage.

polyvore polyamorous

Polyvore is an online fashion community where members can mix and match items of clothing to match the simplest or most obscure, complex theme. Chosen outfits (called 'sets) are shown on the main page and honored for various adherence to contest rules or good eye. Anyone with blogger can register use it and I am kind of freaking out. It's like dressing up like my style-est dreams without maxing out my credit card OR having to you know, actually get up and get dressed. The site was created by ex-yahoo, google, and ebay employees and is really easy to navigate and welcoming to all that use it. The member code of conduct prohibits online bullying or diva-ness that naturally would occur in an anonymous fashion environment. You can make whatever set you like and they have a pretty extensive library of images from places like net-a-porter, ms.selfridges, browns, forever21, zappos, amazon, and with the option to add photos from your photobucket it can get as custom as you want. It's really nice to see interactive fashion-sites that are so well thought-out and keep members involved and it's a really brilliant advertising tool to boot.

later'd ladies

The Fall 08 Marc by Marc ads by Jurgen Teller are out now and stay true to previous ads with the spot flash lighting, semi-desaturated/obscured tones, and a gorgeous waif-y model skulking through the dreamy scene in slo-mo. This seasons womens wear model is none other than Cole Mohr. A fucking fine male model with endearing stick out ears. He turns out the Marc by Marc LBD better than 99% of the females who will posses this dress could ever hope for.
see this link for the M by MJ ad and below for mssr. mohr.

nasty nasty girl

WWWD profiled NastyGal Vintage clothing a few days ago and while I am loath to pay 125 for a dress I know came from SalvArmy. I am majorly appreciative of the excellent eye choosing and styling the vintage wares. I also enjoy that the photos of the sold out items are still up for viewing as they are good mental bookmarks as items to scour for. It just further reinforces that with a little digging, a little cleaning, and a lot of 'tude most anything goes.

Kentucky "lifestyle center" ensnares elementary and middle school girls in web of jelly bracelets and 'lernins

I'm back and full of scoffing, sneering, and sass. Surely, I was missed. As, I am catching up on my emails, old and new news/internet crap reading here is a Jezebel article that briefly highlights a shopping camp for 6-12 at a Louisville, KY shopping center. While the 'camp' does go to places like Barnes & Nobel and Office Max to teach information searches and organization skills, I am rolling my eyes hard at the portion of the kiddie seminar that teaches girls how to put together an outfit and properly accessorize.
Firstly: Is this an incredibly thinly veiled attempt to boost sales by letting hyperactive tweens run amok at the only indoor camp with a food court and a Victoria's Secret? (I quick run-down of the stores in the 'Summit Lifestyle Center' shows a fair amount of brands that are either already bankrupt (Chico's ) or toeing the line (Limited brands ; Gap brands ; Claire's et al.)
Secondly: Who cares if a 6-12 year old can dress themselves stylishly? (answer: other 6-12 yr olds and their mothers with the social mentality of 6-12 yr old) When yours truly was of that tender age, I was decking myself out in all one fluorescent color, crimpin' the shit out of my hair and interspersing tiny braids and bows, painting unicorns on my face, matching my keds to my frilly socks, and stitching together whatever garment I could make from tee shirts swiped from my dad's closet. Basically, I was a tiny Boy George and my parents couldn't care less.
Do children really need to be taught how to properly dress and accessorize their prepubescent forms to some ricidulous, and most-likely poorly dressed, adults dictum? Do they really need to be spending their summer indoors snoring through the organization and information sections and flipping their shit in Limited too? When they could be, I don't know, outside? playing? like children? The article does nicely note that "not all children can be cheerleaders (and football players)" so is compulsive consumer the only other outlet for girls of that age? Apparently, it is in Kentucky.

fun fact: over-heard in a Barnes and Nobel while at the beach (yes, I was in a book-store while at the beach, I was looking for UK vogue & elle, V, and I-D of which they had none)

one approx. 14yr old dressed like Kimora Lee Simmons to another
"This store is like SO gay. I hate it."
reply from other bored tween.
"Jill would love it. She is a mega-nerd"
cackling ensues.
fin.
